Ruan Kalis is the Musical Director of the Quarrymen. He is ably assisted by Dina Potgieter as accompanist.

Ruan is a highly skilled and qualified pianist, organist, music teacher and composer. Born and raised in Paarl, he attended both the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town. He was fortunate to study under some of South Africa’s most revered teachers, such as Melanie Horne, Lamar Crowson, Graham Fitch, and more recently, Albie van Schalkwyk. He holds a Performer’s Diploma in Music from UCT and has composed a number of works. ‘Verweerskrif’, a ‘cross-over’ song cycle of ten settings of poems by Antjie Krog from her collection of the same title was premiered at the Woordfees in Stellenbosch in 2013.

Having taught at Reddam House Atlantic and the University of the Western Cape, Ruan is now the director of music at St Francis of Assisi, an Anglican parish church in Simon’s Town.

Kendra Balmer and Bill Holland each served as Musical Director in 2018. Bill kindly took over when Kendra had to return to the USA. Bill and Kendra succeeded Winsome Fourie, who successfully filled the role of musical director for many years (2007 - 2017). Commander Mike Oldham was the choir’s first musical director.

Dina Potgieter succeeded Alison Lockyer in May 2012 as accompanist of the choir. Dina has the Bachelor of Music degree (violin) as well as the Teacher’s Licentiate (piano). She is qualified as a voice and church organ musician and acquired the LTCL diploma (piano) in Windhoek. She was Head of Department for Piano, Organ, Keyboard and Harpsichord at the College of Arts in Windhoek after lecturing there for years. She was also appointed as the representative of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in Namibia from 1996 to 2010.

Dina recently moved to Cape Town, where she is furthering her development as a pianist, accompanist and music teacher.
