The Quarrymen Male Voice Choir welcomes adult male singers - and aspirant singers - who wish to extend their singing abilities and enjoy making new friends who have a love of music. Our membership is drawn from far and wide in the Cape Peninsula area.

The Quarrymen are based at the Quarry in Glencairn, a short distance from the Simon’s Town Naval Dockyard, near Cape Town, South Africa.

Our membership is drawn from all the many communities of the southern part of the Cape Peninsula: Clovelly, Fish Hoek, Glencairn, Kommetjie, Masiphumelele, Ocean View, Simon’s Town, Sun Valley and further afield.

Our repertoire expands every year and reflects the cultures and traditions of the various communities of the Cape Peninsula.

The Quarrymen perform up to 10 concerts a year. (See “The Repertoire” on this website)

The Choir was started in 2007 by two local residents: Hans Zwets of Fish Hoek and Rory Wilson of Kommetjie. Commander Mike Oldham, former commanding officer of the South African Navy Band, was the choir’s first Musical Director. Alison Lockyear, a Fish Hoek piano teacher, was the first regular accompanist.

Once the choir was established, Winsome Fourie served as Musical Director for ten years. Winsome developed the Choir and enlarged the repertoire which was performed in a number of highly successful concerts before a variety of audiences.

The present Conductor and Musical Director is Bill Holland, who stepped in when the previous Director, Kendra Balmer, had to return to the USA in July. Kendra had taken over the leadership of the choir in February 2018. Both Bill and Kendra have brought new material and skills to the choir.

Dina Potgieter is Accompanist/Pianist of The Quarrymen at both concert performances and weekly practices of the Choir.

Commander Oldham is Patron of the Quarrymen and Hans Zwets is Honorary Life President.
